The Freedom Chronicals

As we await the fall of the Iranian regime, some readers of history will see it as a biblical event. Others will see it as providential in this clash of civilizations. In my book Lessons from Fallen Civilizations, I describe, after Mohammad’s death in 632, the incredibly rapid conquest of the Christian Middle East by Muslim armies.
(Excerpt) Soon after the Prophet was dead, Muslim armies stormed out of the Arabian Desert and conquered Syria, Egypt, and Persia. Damascus fell in 635, substantial portions of today’s Iraq and Jerusalem in 638, Caesarea (today’s Israel) in 641, and Armenia in 643.
The conquest of Egypt took place during the same period. The Muslims won a decisive victory in the Maghreb (North Africa) over the Byzantines at the Battle of Sufetula in Tunisia in 647. By 709, they had complete control of all the African coastline touching the Mediterranean. By 711, they had subdued Spain and were moving into France. Muslim marauders rode into a vacuum left by the Persian and Byzantine empires, which were exhausted from having fought one another for twenty-six years (602-628).
The Roman Empire of the East (termed Byzantium today), headquartered in Constantinople, was simply unable to exercise any real authority outside Western Turkey, Greece, and the Balkans. The Arabs conquered the relatively defenseless Christian Middle East and Africa simply because they could and because it paid well. They were compensated as Muhammad had proscribed; every man was allowed to retain the plunder of those whom he had slain with his own hand, including women and children, with the rest thrown into a stock.
They were further motivated by a religious zeal—their plunder and conquest were blessed by Allah. Slaughters occurred in most of the initial waves of conquest. During the Muslim invasion of Syria in 634, thousands of Christians were massacred. In Mesopotamia, between 635 and 642, monasteries were ransacked and monks and villagers slain…
When the now-hated totalitarian theocracy descended upon the Persian people forty-seven years ago, it imposed an Islamist police state. Over time, this has caused untold numbers of Iranians to renounce Islam. During the most recent riots, mosques were set on fire, in an act of total repudiation of the cruel murderers who continue to impose the Islamic faith upon them. It is a message to the ruling Mullahs—we hate you!
When the US and Israel bring about the conditions necessary for the Persian people to rise up and throw off the theocratic regime, they will free themselves from the brutal domination imposed on them fourteen centuries ago.
